As a musician, producer, arranger, A&R man and all-around spiritual force, Harold Battiste’s long and varied career defined much of what the world has come to know as New Orleans music. Producing such 45s as Jerry Byrne’s white hot rocker “Lights Out” and Barbara George’s influential ’61 R&B smash “I Know” is impressive enough, but throw in James Black’s avant garde jazz LP Monkey Puzzle and Dr. John’s Gris-Gris album and one begins to comprehend that rare combination of local and national success that so few New Orleanians have achieved.
